The AVIF → PNG cycle
For editing: decode the AVIF once, land it in a lossless container your tools accept, and stop worrying about generational loss from here on.
Transparency survives the cycle: both stocks carry a full alpha channel. PNG is lossless, so weight follows content — graphics shrink, photos grow. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.
Need the other direction? Other routes into JPG → PNG, WebP → PNG, GIF → PNG, BMP → PNG.
Questions at the counter
Is AVIF to PNG lossless?
From decode onward, yes: the PNG mirrors exactly what the browser decoded, with transparency intact. No further loss will ever accrue to this copy.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than my AVIF?
AVIF’s compression is a generation ahead of PNG’s — that is its entire selling point. The PNG is a working master for editing, not a shipping format.
Transparency and wide colour?
Alpha survives perfectly. Very wide-gamut AVIFs are rendered into standard RGB in the process — vivid but technically narrowed, which matters only in specialised print workflows.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your AVIF is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
