OUT OF ORDER — JAM REPORT
The GIF → JPG cycle
GIFs rescued from old forums and email threads graduate to full colour and sensible file sizes. The first frame becomes a proper photograph-grade image.
Neither stock holds transparency, so nothing is lost in the wash. JPG lands at ordinary photograph weight. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

Questions at the counter
Which frame of an animated GIF do I get?
The first, always and predictably. If you want a specific frame, extract it in any player first and feed us that still.
Will quality improve from the original GIF?
Colours beyond the original 256-entry palette cannot be invented back. What improves is efficiency: the same perceived look at a fraction of the bytes, plus full-colour headroom for any future editing.
Where does transparency go?
Onto white, as JPEG requires. Classic GIFs with hard transparent cut-outs come out looking like stickers on paper.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your GIF is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
