The BMP → PNG cycle

Every pixel your scanner captured stays exactly as captured — the file simply learns what compression without loss looks like.

PNG keeps transparency; BMP had none to give. PNG is lossless, so weight follows content — graphics shrink, photos grow. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

Questions at the counter

Is BMP to PNG truly lossless?

Completely. Both store exact pixel values; PNG merely compresses them intelligently. Scanned documents and archival images pass through untouched.

How much smaller will it be?

Typically 2–10× depending on content — runs of flat colour compress dramatically, noise barely at all. Either way, never larger.

What about the alpha channel some BMPs claim?

Most BMPs are fully opaque, and those convert trivially. The rare 32-bit variants carry padding rather than useful transparency; it is normalised away.

Is the conversion really private?

Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your BMP is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
