The AVIF → JPG cycle
Cameras and phones have started saving AVIF; the rest of your software has not caught up. Decode happens in your browser — Safari aside, Chrome and Firefox handle it natively.
AVIF carries transparency; JPG cannot keep it — transparent areas flatten onto white. JPG lands at ordinary photograph weight. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

Why can’t my computer open AVIF files?
Support is newer than most installed software. Windows photo viewers and older macOS builds often lack the codec. Converting to JPG hands the image to software you already own.
Does AVIF to JPG lose much quality?
One lossy generation at your chosen temperature — at Hot, practically invisible. As always with lossy-to-lossy hops, convert from the original file rather than a previous conversion.
Will this work in every browser?
Decoding AVIF relies on the browser: Chrome, Firefox and Opera manage it; Safari gained support recently but unevenly. If decoding fails, we say so plainly instead of uploading your file elsewhere.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your AVIF is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
