The WebP → JPG cycle
Plenty of good programs were finished before WebP existed. This cycle translates modern files back to the format they all speak.
WebP carries transparency; JPG cannot keep it — transparent areas flatten onto white. JPG lands at ordinary photograph weight. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

Why can’t I open my WebP file?
You are likely on older software — a pre-2020 macOS Quick Look, an old Office build, many dedicated photo frames. Rather than upgrading the whole toolchain, hand the file a JPG translation.
Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
One extra generation of lossy encoding, at your chosen temperature. At Hot it is effectively invisible; at Cold, minor. Every lossy-to-lossy conversion compounds slightly, so work from the original WebP rather than an already-converted copy.
What happens to transparency?
Flattened onto white, as JPEG demands. Where the WebP showed the page background through, you will now see plain white.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your WebP is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
