The JPG → GIF cycle
Forums, old embed forms and some email clients still ask for a GIF, and only a GIF will do. Your photo goes through the 256-colour wash and comes out in a format every browser since 1987 can open.
Neither stock holds transparency, so nothing is lost in the wash. GIF caps at 256 colours, so photographic loads usually land heavier. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

Will my photo look different as a GIF?
A little, and honestly so. GIF stores at most 256 colours, so gradients like skies compress into visible bands. We build the palette from your actual image rather than a fixed swatch, which keeps the damage small — logos, screenshots and flat graphics often survive untouched.
Does the file get bigger or smaller?
Almost always bigger. JPEG compression is simply more efficient than a 256-colour palette for photographs. Convert to GIF for compatibility, not for savings.
What happens to transparency?
JPEG has none to begin with, and GIF here flattens onto white — so nothing is lost that you had. Edges stay exactly where they were.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your JPG is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
