The BMP → WebP cycle
The maximum-weight format meets the minimum-weight one. Scanner archives and Paint exports become web-ready in a single cycle.
WebP keeps transparency; BMP had none to give. Expect the folded copy noticeably lighter than the load. Either way, re-encoding through the canvas collects EXIF like lint — camera model, GPS coordinates and timestamps are stripped from the folded copy.

How small can it really go?
Dramatically. Uncompressed BMP to quality-85 WebP routinely lands around 1% of the original size — a 30 MB scan becomes a few hundred kilobytes with no visible change.
Lossless or lossy here?
Your choice via the temperature dial. Warm gives the practical best trade for sharing; if the destination is a web gallery, Cold thumbnails are nearly free.
Anything to watch out for?
Keep the BMP until you have compared the result at full size. Once the heavyweight original is gone, the compression decisions baked in are permanent.
Is the conversion really private?
Yes — architecturally. This page is static files; there is no server to receive an upload. Your BMP is decoded and re-encoded inside this tab by your own machine, and you can watch the absence of network traffic in your browser’s developer tools.
